The ‘Coming Back To Earth’ Tour: A Night With The Dangerous Summer // Dallas, TX

The year is 2009, I’m in high school in New Jersey and the hum of The Permanent Rain by The Dangerous Summer buzzes through the headphones of my iPod video. How the individual track got to me is unknown, but its familiar tone has now engraved its way into my mind. So much so, it is the same song that ten years later in 2019, I find myself looking beside my friend as they open for State Champs at The Granada Theater in Dallas Texas saying “Wait- I know this song…”.

Many years have passed since The Dangerous Summer put out their album Reach For The Sun, 15 years exactly. Touring their new album Gravity – I knew I needed to see this band again. Looking out at a packed Club Dada, a sense of nostalgia and a glimmer of hope filled the room. I notice that there is a mixture of legacy fans and newer fans who have hopped on in later years. Regardless of the introduction, they were all here for the same reason.

AJ sounded as if he never missed a beat. Picking what track to use as an opener for a set is never an easy task. But one thing about The Dangerous Summer – they know exactly what to do when it comes to set order. As soon as Pacific Ocean rang through, it was as if it didn’t matter when you became a fan of them… all that mattered was that you were there. You were in the presence of something great. Nothern Lights into Gravity, the setlist was quilted with classics, and a mix of new.

Then, it happened. The tuning of the intro of THE song erupted through the venue. Mind you, I am off to the side overlooking the crowd that has gathered for the night. And when I say something overcame me- it was a feeling shared by everyone. Everyone there that night was simultaneously sharing an intimate moment.

There was a moment I witnessed that night where a father looked at his son right during the bridge of Gravity. That’s when it clicked to me what made this band so unique. The Dangerous Summer had solidified themselves as not only a band to help raise a generation of misfit kids, but also help raise their kids as well. Multigeneration success is rare, but at the end of the night, there was no indication of slowing down. The kids who attended that show will always remember this night, and the parents will never forget how it felt like they were back in 2009.
